Edward Schwartzenburg

Edward was born in 1966 in Southwest Louisiana.  He became an Obstetrician/Gynecologist and joined the practice of his two older brothers, Clifford and Ellis, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  His younger brother George, is a Pediatrician in this same city.  He married Cynthia Fodor in 1992 and began in-depth travels of Hungary.  They have three small children named Candice Fay, John Edward, and Joseph Alexander who have also traveled with them throughout Europe.  Cynthia’s father, John Paul Fodor, is from Hungary, having moved here after participating in the 1956 Revolution against the Soviet Union.

As Cindy and Edward grew into the love of wine, they witnessed the dramatic turnaround of the Hungarian wine culture.  In 1989, the Iron Curtain fell, the vineyards were privatized, and French, Germans, Italians, etc. invested in the wine regions of Hungary.  Prior to this, the state owned communist vineyards produced large quantities of mediocre wine.  The transition has been dramatic and the quality of the wines now exceptional.

The Doctors Schwartzenburg wished to spread the news of the excellent wines from Hungary and purchased a small vineyard in the Matrallja mountain region.  The old vines have been removed, and new ones planted which will give wine in 2008.  Not wanting to delay the introduction of Hungarian wines, Edward befriended many winemakers and decided to begin importing from these vineyards under his label, Black Castle Wines.  After searching far and wide throughout all of the famed wine regions of Hungary, he has selected the best varieties from the best vineyards.

“I know that you will enjoy these wines.  I hope that they can be a part of your celebrations with food, family, and friends.  For this is what life is about!”
